This is a story.
A story about faith, love, hope, grace, deep trust and peace.
I pray it will inspire you. Motivate you to trust. To love without abandon. And to believe in The One who is greater and who is able to do more than we could ever hope or imagine!
This is the story of Waiting on Toby…
I remember attending a Preschool Volunteer Training at our church one evening. At the close of the night, the volunteers scattered throughout the hallways of our preschool wing to pray. Amanda and I rushed downstairs to the nursery, where we spend our Sunday mornings rocking and loving on sweet babies. We knelt in that dark room and began to lift up the families who would be impacted by the ministry that happens in that room each week.
I had slipped into a space where our cribs are lined against the wall and began to pray for all the sweet children who would find their way into those beds. When I opened up my eyes, I saw Amanda in the corner of the nursery- on her knees, head bowed, lifting up other children- knowing that her deepest longing was to bring another one into the world herself. That picture of her selflessly lifting others up in prayer, for the very thing she craved for, is forever etched on my heart.
In that moment, I cried out to God, as I have done many times before, asking that He might give her and her husband another child as well.
We walked out of that room, unaware of the specific prayers that had been lifted up, but I believe, changed- in many ways.
Months later, at our community group, Amanda and Wayne requested to Facetime with us. As soon as I saw her face, tears started falling from my eyes. I was swept away- back to the memory of her on her knees in the nursery, just as she held up a picture from her sonogram.
The celebration that happened that night was beautiful.
And in a week, we will celebrate deeply again, because the precious little one we’ve been praying for, will be in his mommy and daddy’s arms.
The beauty and depth of this story can not be explained in my just my own words. There is far too much that I couldn’t adequately convey, so I asked Amanda to share from her heart about the journey they have walked…
Our journey to welcoming this sweet blessing into our family has been one of faith and total reliance in our relationship with Christ. For four years, each night our precious daughter, Sophia Grace, has prayed diligently for God to give her a baby sister and a baby brother. After years of trying and seeing fertility specialists, surgeries and numerous procedures, praying until the tears no longer flowed, we had come to the belief that God had blessed us with one miracle and we were going to be content knowing that He had already answered our prayer. We let go of our dream of expanding our family and had come to peace that we were exactly the family God had designed us to be. It took us a long time to get there, but we were finally in a good place. However, sweet Sophia continued to pray nightly for that sibling she knew God had for her. Oh to have child-like faith!
The weekend we finally had come to peace with the reality of our situation, I remember putting on the communication card at our church, “peace in letting go.” The very next day we found out we were pregnant! God’s timing is always “on time” and perfect, even when it seems like the journey lasts forever, but His faithfulness never ends. His grace is beyond measure and we will be eternally grateful for this most precious and beautiful gift He has chosen for us to parent and love. Our prayer now is that our children will always know how much they were prayed for and wanted and that the God we serve hears our prayers, even during trials. For this reason we have chosen to name our son Toby, meaning God is good. Indeed He is!
“For this child I have prayed, and the Lord has granted me my petition that I made to him.” 1 Samuel 1:27
Sweet little Toby, our hearts eagerly await your arrival.
We can not wait to tell you the great story about how you’ve been prayed for and about The One who heard and answered our prayers!
